چکیده

The name ‘Frege’s principle’ is well known: it is discussed, obeyed or rejected in philosophy, linguistics, logic and computer science (see e.g. [33] and[45]). Surprisingly, two completely different principles which are denoted by that name. In most fields it refers to ‘the principle of compositionality of meaning’: The meaning of a compound expression is a function of the meaning of its parts and of the syntactic rule by which they are combined. But many philosophers understand it as the ‘context principle’ or ‘the principle of contextuality’. That is a principle that Frege mentions in the beginnings of ‘Grundlagen der Arithmetik’: Never ask for the meaning of a word in isolation, but only in the context of a sentence Authors who interpret the principle in the one way, often are not aware of the fact that others do so in the other way. An impressive description of the intellectual landscape in which the two interpretations bloom is given by Pelletier [45]. In this article I will investigate whether the name ‘Frege’s principle’ is justified in view of Frege’s writings. Did he accept both principles at the same time, did he hold the one principle but not the other, or did he at some moment change his opinion?

Compositionality: its historic context

The aim of this chapter is to investigate the line from the 19th century, through Frege’s works, to the appearance of the principle of compositionality in modern sciences. It is shown that contextuality and compositionality were discussed at the beginnings of the 19th century, but that contextuality was favoured. Also for Frege contextuality was the basic principle and he always obeyed it. Alth...

A Study of Frege’s Influence on A. J. Ayer’s Theory of Emotivism

No doubt, Gottlob Frege and A. J. Ayer are considered to be among the most prominent contemporary philosophers. Insofar as one of them has revolutionized the linguistic domain while the other has influenced the domain of ethics in a diametrical fashion. Ayer’s theory of emotivism is regarded as one of the most controversial moral theories in the past century. We believe that Frege, as a linguis...

Does Compositionality Entail Complexity ?

The view that propositions are mereologically complex structured entities is the regnant paradigm in the philosophy of language and linguistics. As Steven Schiffer says, “Virtually every propositionalist accepts [compositionality] and rejects unstructured propositions”, and even the “new” theories of propositions defended by Peter Hanks, Jeffrey King, Scott Soames, and Jeff Speaks take proposit...

Compositionality Inductively, Co-inductively and Contextually

[[a]] = . . . [[b]] . . . for b a part of a (1) with the meaning function [[·]] appearing on both sides. (1) is commonly construed as a prescription for computing the meaning of a based on the parts of a and their mode of combination. As equality is symmetric, however, we can also read (1) from right to left, as a constraint on the meaning [[b]] of a term b that brings in the wider context wher...
